Overview:

The salary range for this position is $6,180 – $7,384.55 per month ($74,160 – $88,614.49 per year) depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

This position is scheduled to close on August 9, 2024 at 4pm (PST).

This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit with KPBS.
This position is grant-funded for up to three years. Continued employment is dependent on funding.
KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and digital programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university’s educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.
With direction from the KPBS News Director and Managing Editor and under the supervision of the Arts Editor, the KPBS Arts Podcast Producer will be responsible for producing a new local Arts podcast. The concept and project are to be determined by the incoming Arts team.
The Podcast Producer should understand podcast development and best practices, compelling storytelling, podcast deliverables, promotions, underwriting, fundraising, and data analysis. This person will be responsible for implementing the overall Arts Podcast and digital strategy by working with the members of the Arts Desk and collaborating with the KPBS Audio Operations Team, the Production Team and the News Team, as well as the programming and marketing teams. This person has the unique opportunity to create a new arts podcast from the ground up as part of the new KPBS Arts Desk and will seek to weave Arts into the ever-changing needs of our digital content and community engagement initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Podcast Production (80%)
  • Design, produce and create a new KPBS Arts podcast in collaboration with the members of the Arts and programming teams.
  • Producing the Arts Podcast includes but is not limited to; concept development, booking and interviewing guests, coordinating topics, managing workflow, collaborating with hosts and other technical staff, scripting, field recording, tracking, editing, mixing and light sound design.
  • Coordinate and monitor the podcast platform, RSS feeds, digital and NPR One content, as well as develop and implement strategies to improve existing digital and podcast platforms and workflow.
  • Coordinate tasks throughout the production cycle (pre-production, production, and post-production)
  • Write scripts with a voice for podcasting.
  • Interview and interact with content subjects that encourage conversation in uncovering their stories.
  • Ensure high quality studio and field recordings, quality ambient noise, tracking of host sessions, studio interviews, and ensuring the editing and final-mixing of a complete and professional-level product.
  • Utilize multitrack audio editing techniques, compression, sample rates, automation, and digital audio file formats, to export audio in various formats for broadcast, online streaming, and on-demand downloads.
  • Keep abreast of new industry products, technical parameters, production standards, and provide guidance on best practices for other KPBS podcast/audio content.
  • Deliver on-demand content production coaching and troubleshooting.
Marketing & Sustainability (10%)
  • Assist with strategic development of program formats and standards.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications, Fundraising, and Corporate Development to develop, implement and monitor strategies for promotion, outreach, engagement, sponsorships and revenue generation.
  • Lead regular content reviews to track performance and inform strategies to improve audience reach.
  • Edit audio and video for content and promotions when necessary.
Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned (10%)
  • Coordinate web related tasks in relation to podcasts.
  • Utilize and be guided by the KPBS mission statement and strategic plan.
  • Represent KPBS at community and business functions.
  • Performs other administrative tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience with production and recording equipment, including for both studio and field recording.
  • Working knowledge of multi-track editing software such as Adobe Audition.
  • Ability to apply techniques used throughout the production cycle: pre-production, production and post-production.
  • Knowledge of CMS/Grove for web and podcast posting as well as RSS Feed management and best practices.
  • Excellent computer skills and deep knowledge of file management and media file formats.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and deconstruct work processes to optimize production flow.
  • Ability to dynamically manage and prioritize daily, short-and long-term projects.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure time-sensitive situations with a variety of personalities from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability in creative problem solving.
  • Ability to be well organized, meet deadlines, detail oriented; possess good news judgment and common sense.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and make difficult choices in critical situations.
  • Ability to use good judgment in communications with staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability and desire to work with people and in support of other content creators’ projects.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Media, Radio/Television, Communications, Journalism, Audio/Video Production, Sound Design, or equivalent additional years of experience in a related field; additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis
  • Two years of experience in podcast production
Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills
  • Podcast producing in a mid to large scale market environment.
  • Knowledge of the San Diego and Tijuana Arts Community
  • Podcast and production management and strategic planning experience.
  • Advanced audio and video production skills.
  • Bilingual, Spanish preferred.
  • Technical writing and process documentation development experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of public media.
