LEAD INSTRUCTOR, MULTIMEDIA PRODUCING 

an Arts2Work Pre-Apprenticeship program for emerging media makers 

The Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) is a non-profit, community-based,  human social services organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for South Central  Los Angeles residents. WLCAC has partnered with the Alliance for Media Arts + Culture to  sponsor the first Arts2Work registered Pre-Apprenticeship program for Multimedia Producers at  the WLCAC campus in Watts. 

This is a yearlong work-based learning program designed to prepare emerging video and audio  producers/directors/storytellers for jobs in a range of industries as well as entrepreneurial  opportunities. Trainees work in a collaborative classroom setting for the first part of the program,  and then become a production team working on client projects that could include short  documentary, social media campaigns, installation, podcasts, brand content, short narrative  films, experimental interactive works, and more. During the program, industry networking is a  key feature; local award-winning artists, producers, designers and creative technologists will join  the Apprentices for informational lunch sessions, portfolio reviews, mentoring, etc. 

We are seeking a Lead Instructor/Mentor for the Program, which is slated to begin Thursday  September 5, 2024 at the Howard Bingham Multimedia Institute at WLCAC. The position will  also include some additional hours during the summer for program planning, curriculum  development, and advising equipment purchasing and participant selection.  

The schedule for the program will be 20 hours per week including in-class time and additional  Open Lab hours. Students will range in age from 18 – 24 and will have had some prior  experience with media production and post. The young people in the program will also likely  have faced some barriers to employment in their life and we will work together to ensure  success for everyone who dreams of a creative career.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lesson Plan Development aligned with industry standards and Arts2Work competencies (we  help you with this!!). 

Inspired, entrepreneurial, compassionate and professional teaching – expertise in topics  including visual storytelling, media production + post, cinematography, digital workflows, Adobe  Creative Cloud, Pro-Tools, collaboration, inter-personal skills and cultural stewardship 

Support WLCAC and Arts2Work staff in the acquisition of camera packages, audio and video  production and post-production gear, laptops, software and other needed items for training and  production 

Prepare trainees for the Adobe Certified Professional Exam in Premiere Pro, and any other  available certifications for which they are prepared and eligible

Lead in-person programming three days a week in Watts, CA, always arriving on time,  supporting class and equipment set-up, safety training,  

Monitor and assess trainee proficiency in selected professional competencies (we show you  how to do this!) 

Mentor a Teaching Assistant 

Collaborate with program staff to identify and develop meaningful client projects  Oversee the production and editing of high-quality content for selected clients  Plan and co-produce a culminating screening event showcasing trainee work and potential. Support WLCAC and Arts2Work staff with interview prep and portfolio development Provide industry and career insight and advice 

Support collaboration among trainees and strong relationship development Foster community with Instructors, administrators, mentors and trainees 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Professional filmmaker with a resume that reflects a diverse, mature body of work with a  distinctive voice 

2-3 years of experience teaching production and post, camera, lighting, editing, video and audio  workflows in a classroom or community setting. 

Familiarity with trauma-informed teaching and learning principles 

Familiarity with AR/VR/XR/AI, VFX and emerging creative technologies and hardware Adobe Certified Professional in Premiere Pro preferred, but not required 

Demonstrated experience building teams and teaching emerging artists 18 – 24 Some knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 

A high degree of cultural and self-awareness and the ability to ask for help Effective organizational and time-management skills and a healthy sense 

SALARY 

This is a part-time position that does not include health benefits. 

Salary: $40 per hour.
