On The “Open” Road
This month of February consisted of my usual post-Sundance hibernation — deep thinking. program planning, partnership building, and a whole bunch of grant writing. In March, The Alliance is hitting the road and we are eager to connect with our people and organizations across the country. The road is “open” because we are open to new ideas, work with open source technology, believe in open borders, an open internet, and open hearts and minds. Here’s what we are up to and where you can find us:

Creative Apprenticeship: A New Frame for Arts Ed
Tuesday, March 4, 11AM, Hilton Austin Downtown Room 410
This session is an interactive “campfire session” about Arts2Work. The big ideas we’ll address sit at the intersection of adaptive approaches to digital innovation, collaborative education systems, equity/inclusion, creative mastery and cultural imagination, and social practice media making. How do we build new pathways from the arts classroom to the creative workforce?

Art, Race and Open Web VR: The Colored Girls Museum
Saturday, March 9, 11AM, Austin Convention Center Ballroom F
This is a panel exploring the early days of WebVR and how we might build technology to fuel creative experiences that embrace and reflect who we are. We’ll introduce the work The Alliance has been doing with Microsoft on the VR Colored Girls Museum project and have a discussion about identity, co-creation, cultural futurism, and the promise of accessible XR in the browser.
THE PARTNERSHIP TO ADVANCE YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP NATIONAL MEETING

Senior Consultant and Arts2Work Operations Director Christina Orticke will be representing The Alliance at this convening. The Partnership to Advance Youth Apprenticeship (PAYA) is a multi-year initiative to support efforts in states and cities to expand access to high-quality apprenticeship opportunities for high school age youth. A program of New America, PAYA is a national consortium of visionary organizations and funders, including The Annie E. Casey Foundation, Bloomberg Foundation, Jobs for the Future, National Fund for Workforce Solutions, The National Governors Association, and others.
SF BAY AREA MEETINGS
March 11 – 13
We have ongoing and developing partnerships in the Bay that are getting some facetime (Oculus, Adobe, Salesforce, Mozilla, BAVC) and would love to meet with as many Bay Area members as possible. Reach out if you’d like to get something on the calendar!
NYC MEETINGS
March 21 – 24
2020 is The Alliance for Media Arts + Culture’s 40th birthday year (!) and this is when the planning gets fully underway. We will co-produce a series of events and a National Day of Storytelling at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama in 10/2020. In NYC March 2019, we’ll meet with archivist Jocelyn Arem at Arbo Radiko to explore how to bring The Alliance collections to life, and with our visionary friends at Ghetto Film School. And if you are not familiar with the NYU Center for Critical Race and Digital Studies, (CR + DS) – we are developing a research project with Dr. Charlton McIlwaine that will hopefully have broad implications for next generation filmmakers. Stay tuned for more on this project
