The Issue
The Issue Fall / Winter 2018 is a testament to the power of intergenerational co-creation to tell beautiful, compelling, and intimate stories about the identity of a place and its people. Love THE ISSUE? Purchase your own magazine here (not a digital version, an actual full color book!) as a gift for yourself, your family, your friends, or your local library! Over the course of eight months, The Issue Editorial Team worked collaboratively with partners, contributors, and editors to find the exact words and aesthetics for each individual piece, each section, and the magazine as a whole. It was a raw and vulnerable process of open communication, trust in each other, and striving for excellence all while being kind, honest, and rigorous.
To make this possible, The Alliance partnered with Open Signal, The Real Chi / Free Spirit Media, Austin Film Society, and Orange County Public Library from March to October 2018 and facilitated a cohort-based production process that included practitioner-centered professional development, enriching and deepening partners’ summer programs, and connecting emerging editors to emerging writers / contributors nationally. This wide and deep approach yielded both rich relationships / partnerships and moving content.
We want to give a special shout out to Creative Action in Austin, TX, who provided us with our cover image. Their mural program Color Squad is bringing vibrancy to public space while centering youth voice and expression.
